Technical optics refers to the design and manufacturing of optical systems and the mechanisms behind these systems. In contrast to physical optics, technical optics is a branch of the engineering sciences: it is concerned with the design and manufacturing of optical devices.

In addition to wave optics, technical optics takes in areas such as optical components and systems, light technology, optical devices, light conductors and fibre optics.
