Cone dystrophy – loss of colour vision

Cone dystrophy – loss of colour vision

Dystrophies describe genetic developmental disorders of physical structures that ultimately lead to dysfunctions. They are irreversible, degenerative changes to organs, tissue or entire organisms.
Cone dystrophy refers to a group of eye disorders that lead to the dysfunction or function loss of the cones located in the macula lutea (area of sharpest vision).
Generally speaking, these pathological changes develop from the age of 20 onwards. First symptoms include decreased colour vision and the gradual loss of visual acuity. Depending on the size of the area affected by cone dysfunction, scotoma (patchy vision) and increased glare sensitivity may develop.
